A forklift that clicks when you turn the key but won't crank is almost always a starter problem — not a dead battery. On Hyster and Yale forklifts with Mazda F2 or FE engines, starter 1534424 is a common point of failure after enough hours.
What a single click usually means
- Worn starter motor — the solenoid engages (that's the click) but the motor itself can't turn the engine over
- Weak battery — can also cause a single click; check battery voltage first to rule this out
- Corroded battery terminals or ground strap — poor connections can starve the starter of the current it needs
- Bad starter relay — less common, but worth checking if the starter tests fine on the bench
How to tell it's the starter
If the battery tests good and terminals are clean, but you still only get a click (or a slow, labored crank that won't catch), the starter motor itself has likely worn out internally and can no longer generate enough torque to turn the engine.
