OEM & Aftermarket Equipment Paint Guide: Forklift, Aerial Lift & Construction Equipment Colors

Start reading

A worn, faded or rust-streaked paint job on a forklift or piece of construction equipment isn't just cosmetic — a factory-matched finish protects sheet metal from corrosion, UV breakdown and the wear that comes from years outdoors, and it's a fast way to hold onto resale value when a fleet unit changes hands. This guide covers how to identify the right OEM color for your equipment, tips for getting a clean finish with aerosol touch-up paint, and a color reference across the brands we get asked about most.

Equipment This Applies To

  • Forklifts — cushion and pneumatic tire, electric and IC
  • Aerial lifts — boom lifts, scissor lifts, vertical mast lifts
  • Burden carriers and utility vehicles
  • Sweepers and scrubbers
  • Compact construction equipment — mini excavators, skid steers, compact wheel loaders

Aerosol Touch-Up Paint

We stock OEM-matched paint in aerosol spray cans — the right format for chips, scratches, worn edges, small rust spots, and touch-up work on equipment that doesn't need a full repaint. Each can is formulated to meet or exceed the original manufacturer's specification for color and gloss, so a touch-up should blend in cleanly with the surrounding factory finish.

How to Find Your Equipment's Correct Color

The fastest way to get an exact match is the OEM paint code, when your equipment has one — it's sometimes found on a data plate or in the parts manual. If you don't have a paint code, the color can usually still be identified from:

  • Equipment make and model
  • Serial number
  • Year of manufacture

Manufacturers have changed shades over the years — Toyota alone has run an older "Toyota Orange" and a newer "New Orange," and Clark has several distinct greens depending on the era — so matching by serial number and year matters as much as matching by brand name.

Surface Prep Tips for a Clean Finish

  • Remove rust down to bare metal before priming — painting over active rust just traps it under the new finish
  • Degrease the surface fully; oil and grease film will cause the paint to fisheye or lift
  • Sand damaged or glossy areas so the new coat has something to bite into
  • Prime bare metal before color coats, especially on repaired or welded areas
  • Let each coat flash off before applying the next — check the can for recoat times
  • Apply several light coats rather than one heavy coat to avoid runs and get even coverage
