The Toyota 4Y is one of the most common gas/LPG engines in the forklift world, and after enough hours it will start burning oil or losing compression. Before you jump to a full rebuild, a piston ring set is often the fix — especially if the cylinders have already been bored oversize at some point.
Signs your 4Y needs new rings
- Blue-tinged exhaust smoke, especially under load or after idling
- Noticeably higher oil consumption between changes
- Loss of compression on a compression test
- Rough idle that a tune-up doesn't fix
Why .25mm oversize
Part 13014-73020 is sized at .25mm over standard. This is the correct ring set if your block has already been bored .25mm oversize — common after a prior rebuild. Always measure your cylinder bore before ordering; installing oversize rings in a standard bore will not seal correctly.

Installation overview
This is a piston-out job: pull the head, disconnect the rod caps, and remove each piston to access the ring grooves. Clean the grooves thoroughly, gap-check each ring against the bore per Toyota spec, then install using a ring expander tool to avoid cracking them. Torque rod caps to spec before buttoning the engine back up.
This is not a quick in-frame job — budget a full day if it's your first time, and always replace the head gasket set at the same time since you'll already have the head off.
