A forklift's brakes are the one system that has zero tolerance for neglect. A dying alternator gets you a warning light; a worn wheel cylinder gets you a loaded truck that doesn't stop where you expect it to. This guide covers how to tell your brakes need service, what's actually inside a brake kit, and part numbers for the Toyota, Mitsubishi and Caterpillar cushion-tire models we get asked about most.
Why Brake Service Can't Wait
Forklifts operate at slow speeds, but they carry loads that a passenger vehicle never will. A drum brake system that's leaking fluid, glazed, or out of adjustment doesn't just stop later than it should — it can stop unevenly, pulling the truck to one side under load, or fail to hold on a ramp. Worn linings and contaminated wheel cylinders also accelerate wear on drums, axles and seals, turning a routine brake job into a bigger repair if it's put off too long.
Warning Signs Your Forklift Needs Brake Service
- The truck doesn't stop within its normal distance, loaded or empty
- Brake pedal travels further than normal, or goes to the floor
- Visible brake fluid leaking at a wheel cylinder or master cylinder
- Wet or oil-contaminated brake shoes
- A wheel cylinder that's seized, leaking or damaged
- Linings worn down close to the shoe
- Parking brake won't hold the truck on a grade
- Grinding or scraping noise when braking
- Braking is uneven side to side
- Truck pulls to one side when the brake is applied
- Soft or spongy pedal feel
- Brake fluid level dropping between checks with no visible external leak
Any one of these is a reason to inspect the brake system before the truck goes back into service.
Minor Kit vs. Major Kit: What's the Difference?
Forklift brake kits are typically sold at two levels, and knowing which one your truck needs saves both money and a second order.
- Minor kit — brake shoes, wheel cylinders, return springs, hold-down hardware and seals. This covers a standard shoe-and-cylinder replacement.
- Major kit — everything in the minor kit, plus the master cylinder, parking brake cable and self-adjuster hardware. This is the right call for a full overhaul, a soft pedal that doesn't trace back to the shoes alone, or a truck that's never had the master cylinder touched.
If your pedal is soft, you're seeing a leak at the master cylinder, or you're overhauling the brakes for the first time, go with the major kit — replacing shoes and cylinders alone won't fix a bad master cylinder.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long do forklift brakes last?
Most forklift brake systems hold up for roughly 2,000 to 5,000 operating hours, depending on load weights, duty cycle, and how consistently the truck is maintained. A forklift running heavy loads on an incline all day will wear brakes faster than one doing light warehouse work.
Do I need to replace the master cylinder?
If the pedal feels soft or spongy, you see fluid at the master cylinder, or you're doing a full overhaul, replace it as part of the job — a worn master cylinder will undo the benefit of new shoes and wheel cylinders.
What's actually different between a minor and major kit?
A minor kit covers the shoes, wheel cylinders, springs, seals and hardware. A major kit adds the master cylinder, parking brake cable and self-adjuster mechanism on top of that.
Can I install a brake kit myself?
An experienced technician can, but proper adjustment and system bleeding afterward are what make the repair safe — a brake job that isn't bled and adjusted correctly can feel fine and still under-perform under load.
