Rubber tracks are one of the most overlooked wear items on a compact track loader or skid steer. Operators watch engine hours, change filters, and grease pins on schedule — but tracks often get run until they fail. The problem is that worn tracks don't just wear out quietly. They cost you money long before they break, and when they do fail, it's rarely at a convenient time or place.
Here's why staying ahead of track replacement matters, how to know when it's time, and how to get the right replacement set the first time.
Why Worn Tracks Cost More Than New Ones
1. Lost traction means lost productivity
As lugs wear down, your machine loses grip on slopes, in mud, and on loose material. Operators compensate by working slower, taking shallower cuts, and making more passes. On a grading or landscaping job, that adds up to real hours — and worn tracks spin more, which burns extra fuel doing the same work.
2. Worn tracks damage the undercarriage
This is the expensive part. A stretched, cracked, or de-lugged track doesn't ride correctly on the rollers, idlers, and sprockets. It slips, derails more easily, and accelerates wear on every steel component it touches. The undercarriage already accounts for roughly half the lifetime maintenance cost of a tracked machine — running bad tracks makes those components wear out even faster. A $2,000 track replacement deferred can turn into a sprocket, roller, and idler job worth several times that.
3. A track failure stops the job completely
When a track snaps or throws off the undercarriage in the middle of a job site, the machine is done for the day — sometimes longer. You're looking at emergency parts shipping, a service call or a difficult field replacement, idle operators, and a missed deadline. Compare that to a planned replacement done in your yard on your schedule.
4. Safety
Reduced traction on slopes and ramps isn't just slow — it's dangerous. A machine that slides while loading on a trailer or working a grade puts the operator and everyone nearby at risk.
Signs It's Time to Replace Your Rubber Tracks
- Lug height worn down 50% or more — traction drops off sharply past this point
- Cracks in the rubber, especially cracks that expose the internal steel cords
- Visible or rusting steel cords — once cords are exposed, failure can come quickly
- Missing or torn lugs, or chunks of rubber breaking away
- Frequent de-tracking even with correct tension — often a sign the track has stretched
- Damaged drive lug windows (the openings that engage the sprocket) — this causes ratcheting and slipping under load
As a rule of thumb, rubber tracks last somewhere in the range of 1,200–1,600 hours depending on surface, operating habits, and maintenance — but abrasive surfaces like demolition debris, rock, and asphalt can cut that dramatically. Inspect tracks every 50 hours and check tension regularly; both over-tightened and loose tracks wear out early.
How to Get More Life Out of a New Set
- Keep track tension within the manufacturer's spec — check sag per your operator's manual
- Avoid spinning and counter-rotating on abrasive surfaces like concrete and gravel
- Make wide, three-point turns instead of aggressive pivot turns when possible
- Clean packed mud, rock, and debris out of the undercarriage at the end of the day
- Replace worn sprockets when you replace tracks — a worn sprocket will chew up new tracks fast
Ordering the Right Replacement Tracks
Rubber tracks are sized by three numbers: width x pitch x number of links. For example, a track marked 320x86x52 is 320 mm wide, has an 86 mm pitch (distance between drive lugs), and 52 links. You can usually find this molded into the inside or outside of your existing track. If it's worn off, your machine's model and serial number will identify the correct size — for example, common sizes include 320x86 and 450x86 patterns for many Bobcat, CAT, Kubota, Takeuchi, and John Deere compact track loaders.
When you order, have this ready:
- Machine make, model, and serial number
- Track size marking if readable (e.g. 320x86x52)
- Tread pattern preference — block, C-lug, or zig-zag patterns each trade off traction, ride quality, and wear life
And remember: always replace tracks in pairs. A new track paired with a half-worn one will cause uneven wear, tracking problems, and shorter life on the new track.
